I came to get down, I came to get down, so get out your seat and jump around!” When breaking in an Edinburgh Fringe newbie the temptation is to just go for the big name acts, the guaranteed bangers, the safe pairs of hands. This would be a mistake, because to do that would be to miss out on acts like Abandoman who have the potential to raise the roof and then burn it down!

I first caught Abandoman at the Soho theatre a few years ago, they performed a solid, enjoyable set to a middle class Soho audience but I always felt that given the right audience and the right venue (the top floor of the soho theatre really does suck) that they could provide a fantastic night.

As my fringe virgin pal was also a rap fan I thought that this could be a great part of his first night at the fringe and boy was I right.

It’s hard to review an improv gig as the success of the night depends entirely upon the quality of the audience and their willingness to join in. That being said Rob Broderick delivered an almost lyrically perfect set. He incorporated a true cross section of the audience in to his work and cleverly twisted the various themes in to his flow.

The audience played their part and on this night the topsy-turvy cow was jumping. I didn’t think that you could drop Tutankhamun bars to a drunk Scottish audience and get anything other than a confused look in return but we had arms waving like Naughty-by-Nature had dropped in! And on top of all that it was actually funny.

As I said you will never get exactly the same show that I experienced on this particular night, some will be better and some will be worse but I can guarantee that Abandoman will leave everything that he has on the stage in the pursuit of delivering a great night.
