It has been quite a while since we last caught a show at the Soho Theatre, no real reason for this but as we walked through the doors it hit me just how much I’d missed it. There is a real energy to this venue that you don’t find everywhere -particularly on a random week night- and the excellent bar team (thank you Damian and co) keep the service fluid, and the fluids flowing!
Normally it’s me suggesting which clowns to see but on this occasion my Essex pal had bought the tickets and was genuinely buzzin’ to see Phil live. I had never seen his full show, most recently I remember catching his Roast Battle with Johnny Vegas, but that really didn’t feel like the best showcase for his madcap style. I had been told that you never really knew what to expect, and boy was that statement ever true.
Our clown show takes to the stage in a black morphsuit, which leaves nothing to the imagination, and a bin bag on his head to delay the “big reveal”. He introduces his band “The Two Cammys” and then tears through the bin bag to reveal his cat ears and face paint whiskers – it’s a tough scene to truly do justice to but have no doubt that the madness has begun… and it is an experience to savour.
This show includes impromptu musical performances, dancing, TikTok videos and even an improvised rap with gags, puns and audience interactions gleefully scattered in. It’s a fantastically funny ball of chaos where the intentional failures are just as good as the perfectly performed material.
We laughed a lot and I just remember being swept up in the experience, this is a show that I can’t recommend highly enough for anyone just wanted to turn off their brain from daily life and truly enjoy an hour of entertainment.
