Clownster Comedy

So, yes, this is another comedy review site (like Chortle… only less professional, exhaustive or well written) but these are just my opinions so hardly deserve gospel status. I have been watching live comedy for around 15 years and I have to say that I 100% admire anyone who has the guts to take to a spot lit stage in front of an unknown crowd armed with just a microphone and their wits. It’s a profession that I know I could not do and for that I doff my tiny bowler hat to them.

Flo & Joan: VAULT Festival (WiP 2018)

I missed Flo & Joan at last years Edinburgh Festival and, to be honest, it wasn't until they started turning up in TV ads that I remembered wanting to catch their act. They were fun, fresh and offered up some... Continue Reading →

Bill Hicks: Relentless (recorded 1991)

How does one even begin to review Bill Hicks? I think a good place to start would be with his choice of intro music... Hendrix, a genius in his chosen field who left us far too soon and with only... Continue Reading →

Ricky Gervais: Humanity (2017)

Despite being a fan of his work, I have never actually seen Ricky Gervais perform stand-up. Having heard that his live shows were generally inferior to his TV work, I wasn't sure what to expect. But I was very up... Continue Reading →

Bob Monkhouse: The Last Stand (recorded 2003)

Many remember Bob Monkhouse as a slick game-show host from the 1980s and 90s. But to reduce him to just that would do a great disservice to arguably the greatest gag merchant of all time. This live performance was his... Continue Reading →

Mae Martin: Dope (2017)

Everyone has a type of comedy that they love - sketch, end-of-pier, quickfire gag artists, surreal, musical etc etc. My personal favourite has always been the storyteller, the clown who can mix insightful truth and sadness into an hour where... Continue Reading →

The Horne Section w/ Tim Key (2017)

There is something ever so comfortable about The Horne Section – they get on stage and within minutes you feel feel like one of the guys, part of the banter, in on the joke. It's an incredible skill and is one... Continue Reading →

Andrew Maxwell: Showtime (2017)

Sure thing, no-brainer, it's in the bag, guaranteed, easy three points...  Money! I am running out of ways to clarify that, on any night, Andrew Maxwell will kill it! The Clown Prince of Comedy is back and once again he... Continue Reading →

Mark Thomas: A Show that Gambles on the Future (2017)

And the future leader of the Clown Party and our next Prime Minister is... Why does this man not run for government? I am not a particularly politically minded person but this clown makes me think, challenges my attitudes and... Continue Reading →

Nick Helm: Masterworks in Progress ’17 (2017)

As the star of Uncle and the most sympathetic character in the recent Channel 4 series Loaded Nick Helm knows a thing or two about drama. And it is this knowledge that is responsible for one of the darkest and most compelling... Continue Reading →
